Inspiration
Our journey began with a deep-rooted passion for supporting Texas educators in their quest for financial stability and security. The challenge of navigating options like TRS, 403(b), and IRA was daunting. This inspired us to create a tool that not only simplifies this process but also empowers teachers to take control of their financial futures. We envisioned a platform where educators could easily understand their retirement options and make informed choices that would benefit them for years to come.
What it does
The Retirement-Ranch calculator serves as a comprehensive retirement planning tool tailored specifically for Texas teachers. Users can input their financial details and preferences, and the calculator generates a clear and concise overview of available retirement plans. It breaks down the intricacies of each option—TRS, 403(b), and IRA—highlighting key features, contribution limits, and tax implications. This empowers educators to evaluate their choices side by side, ultimately helping them choose the best plan for their unique needs.
How we built it
We used Python Flask for the backend, leveraging its flexibility and ease of use to create a robust application. The frontend was developed using HTML and CSS, ensuring a clean and responsive design that enhances user experience. We incorporated a MongoDB schema to manage our data efficiently, allowing us to store user inputs and plan details dynamically. The integration of APIs was crucial for pulling in real-time data on retirement plans, ensuring our users have access to the most current information.
Challenges we ran into
One of the most significant challenges we faced was the collection of accurate and up-to-date information regarding each retirement plan. Gathering details about TRS, 403(b), and IRA options required extensive research, often leading us down complicated paths with limited resources. We scoured the internet for credible sources, consulted financial experts, and navigated official documents to piece together a comprehensive overview of each plan. This experience underscored the importance of data integrity and the need for reliable resources
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the solid application we developed within just 24 hours. The feedback we received from early users has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the application's clarity and ease of use. Our design not only makes retirement planning accessible but also visually engaging, transforming what can often be a dry topic into an interactive experience. We believe we have created a tool that genuinely meets the needs of Texas teachers, and that is an accomplishment we hold dear. The application’s visually appealing design, complete with intuitive graphs and charts, allows users to analyze their retirement strategies at a glance, making the planning process both engaging and informative.
What we learned
Throughout the development of this project, we gained invaluable insights into various retirement plans available to educators in Texas. We learned how each plan operates, including contribution limits, tax implications, and eligibility requirements. This experience enriched our understanding of personal finance and its significance in long-term planning. Moreover, we enhanced our technical skills by incorporating Auth0 for user authentication, which taught us about securing user data effectively. Working with multiple APIs also improved our ability to manage and synthesize data from diverse sources, a skill that will undoubtedly benefit future projects.
What's next for Retirement-Ranch
Looking ahead, we are excited about the potential to incorporate a machine learning model that analyzes data from numerous users. By utilizing this model, we aim to provide personalized recommendations based on individual financial situations and preferences. This enhancement will enable educators to receive tailored suggestions for their retirement planning, making the tool even more effective and user-centric.
