Inspiration - Originally, I knew I wanted to do something philanthropy-based. Additionally, I wanted to be able to cater to people who may not know much about sustainability and eco-conscious people alike. For the grounds itself, I used to play a game that had a challenge-based system. I took elements of that and worked it into my idea, creating a way for eco-conscious people to complete challenges in a fun, addicting way.
What it does - This project is meant to educate people about sustainable initiatives, whether it be out in the world or simply in their own home!
How we built it - I had created this project in Canva. This allows for some flexibility in how my visuals look for someone on my level of coding knowledge.
Challenges we ran into - Due to the time limit and team size, this is a very simplistic project. In addition, some challenges are not fully able to cater to all audiences because they include things like changing your diet for a day, or implying that the user shops fast fashion. This constraint means that the main audience is upper middle class. I would love to work on this again to make it into a website so that I can add many other features like a blog or an actual point system that tracks each users' progress.
Accomplishments that we're proud of - I think this project gets the idea I originally had across well. I also love the idea of an App of the Day, where each user can increase their sustainability impact further.
What we learned - Coding is not something that can be taught in one day! It takes time to gain the knowledge you need to be successful, and I will definitely try to learn more in advance before my next hackathon.
What's next for SustainUp! - I'm planning on showing this to my LLC, which is a sustainability class. Additionally, I want to pitch the idea to the President of Marketing in the Eco-reps club for students to participate in during October! Over time, I want to be able to flesh out this project as well so that it can stand up on its own a little more.
