Our Journey Building Sustainify 🌱
The Spark That Started It All 💡
Our journey began with a profound sadness - watching helplessly as marine life, especially turtles, suffered due to plastic pollution. We realized that the biggest hurdle in sustainability isn't lack of solutions, but rather the perceived inconvenience and disconnection people feel from the problem. This sparked a powerful question: What if we could make sustainability not just effortless, but exciting?
We understood a fundamental truth about human nature - we all love competition. This led to our breakthrough idea: What if we could harness this competitive spirit for the good of our planet? Thus, Sustainify was born - a platform that transforms sustainable living into an engaging, competitive, and rewarding experience.
Building Our Vision 🛠️
Technology Choices
We made a strategic decision to build Sustainify using Expo and React Native for several key reasons:
- Universal Accessibility: We wanted our impact to reach as many people as possible, so cross-platform compatibility was crucial
- Rapid Development: As first-time hackers, Expo's managed workflow allowed us to focus on features rather than configuration
- Modern Architecture: The file-based routing of Expo Router helped us create a clean, maintainable codebase
Key Features
- Impact Dashboard: Real-time visualization of users' sustainability scores and progress
- Global Leaderboard: Competitive element that drives engagement and motivation
- AI-Powered Assistant: Integration with Google's Gemini AI for personalized sustainability advice
- Sustainable Places Map: Interactive map helping users discover eco-friendly locations
Data Integration
Our collaboration with Knot was transformative. Their transaction data API became the backbone of our scoring system, allowing us to:
- Track purchasing patterns
- Calculate environmental impact scores
- Provide personalized recommendations
- Generate meaningful insights
Challenges and Learnings
As first-time hackathon participants, we faced numerous challenges that tested our resilience:
1. Data Processing Complexity
- Challenge: Making sense of Knot's transaction data structure
- Solution: Created a robust parsing system and scoring algorithm
- Learning: The importance of data normalization and clean architecture
2. AI Integration Hurdles
- Challenge: Integrating Gemini API with Expo's environment
- Solution: Developed a custom wrapper for API calls that worked across platforms
- Learning: The nuances of working with AI APIs in a cross-platform environment
3. Backend Integration
- Challenge: Spent 6 hours trying to connect Python backend with React Native frontend
- Solution: Pivoted to a more JavaScript-centric approach using Node.js
- Learning: Sometimes the best solution isn't the first one you try
4. Cross-Platform Compatibility
- Challenge: Ensuring consistent behavior across web and mobile platforms
- Solution: Implemented platform-specific code where necessary
- Learning: The importance of responsive design and platform-specific considerations
Technical Achievements 🏆
- Scalable Architecture: Built a system that can handle growing user bases and data volumes
- Real-time Updates: Implemented efficient state management for live score updates
- AI Integration: Successfully integrated advanced AI capabilities for personalized recommendations
- Interactive Mapping: Created a responsive and user-friendly map interface
Looking Forward 🚀
This hackathon was just the beginning. We plan to:
- Expand our eco-friendly location database
- Implement more sophisticated scoring algorithms
- Add social features for community building
- Partner with sustainable brands and organizations
The Bigger Picture 🌍
Sustainify isn't just an app - it's a movement. By making sustainability competitive and engaging, we're:
- Making eco-friendly choices more accessible
- Creating a community of environmentally conscious individuals
- Proving that technology can be a force for environmental good
- Showing that small actions, when multiplied across many people, can create significant impact
Our first hackathon taught us that with determination, creativity, and a clear purpose, even beginners can create something meaningful. We may have started as novices, but we emerged as confident developers with a mission to make the world a better place, one sustainable choice at a time.
