About the Project

We created SUSTAINEDAWAY with a simple thought: How can people know whether the products they buy every day are actually sustainable?

Today, many products are marketed as eco-friendly, but consumers often lack the information needed to verify these claims. Understanding ingredient impact, environmental consequences, and sustainable alternatives can be difficult and time-consuming.

This inspired us to build SUSTAINEDAWAY, an AI-powered sustainability platform that helps consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.

Our platform allows users to scan products and understand their eco-score, ingredient impact, environmental impact, and available sustainable alternatives. Users can also scan purchase bills to analyze their purchases and rate stores based on their experiences.

One of our unique initiatives is SustainaVoice, which gives consumers a space to anonymously share reviews, complaints, and suggestions about any product. These submissions are published on SUSTAINEDAWAY's X page without revealing the users' identities, giving consumers a voice to express their concerns.

The platform also maintains a history of previous scans, allowing users to revisit their results.

How We Built It

We developed SUSTAINEDAWAY using React.js, React Native, Python, and HTML. Firebase Authentication handles user authentication, while Cloud Firestore manages application data. Mapbox supports location-based functionality, and media management handles uploaded images and bills. AI integration supports product sustainability analysis, while X integration enables anonymous consumer feedback to be published on our platform's X page.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we explored how AI can be applied to real-world sustainability challenges. We gained experience in application development, database management, authentication, API integration, and connecting different technologies to build a unified platform.

Challenges We Faced

One of our major challenges was bringing multiple functionalities together into a single, user-friendly platform. Designing a meaningful sustainability assessment, processing scanned information, maintaining user privacy, and integrating anonymous feedback with X required careful planning and development.

SUSTAINEDAWAY is our step towards making sustainability information more accessible, encouraging responsible consumption, and giving consumers the power to make informed choices.
