🌍 Project Story – SustainAlign
✨ About the Project
SustainAlign is an AI-powered CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) connection platform designed to bridge the gap between corporates, NGOs, and regulators. The goal is simple:
- Help corporates align their CSR spending with SDGs & ESG priorities.
- Enable NGOs to showcase credible projects transparently.
- Provide regulators with a compliance-ready system that ensures funds are used effectively.
At its core, SustainAlign is about connecting purpose with impact.
💡 Inspiration
The project was inspired by three key realities:
India’s CSR Mandate: Corporations in India are mandated to spend at least 2% of their profits on CSR activities. But many struggle to identify credible projects that align with both compliance needs and company values.
NGO Visibility Problem: Thousands of NGOs are doing meaningful work, yet they lack the digital visibility and credibility scoring that corporates require before funding.
Global ESG Push: Worldwide, businesses are pressured to measure and report impact beyond profit — particularly against UN SDGs and ESG benchmarks.
These gaps sparked the idea: What if there was a platform that intelligently aligned corporate CSR budgets with NGO projects while ensuring compliance and transparency?
🛠️ How We Built It
We structured the project into modular pages and AI agents:
- Corporate Profile Setup → Corporations define budgets, ESG goals, and SDG priorities.
- Project Discovery & Alignment → AI Agent filters NGO projects using APIs, evaluates alignment, and scores credibility.
- Evaluation Matrix → Side-by-side project comparison on cost, impact, SDG coverage, and risks.
- Decision Support → Explainable AI suggests the “Top 3” projects with rationale.
- Monitoring & Tracking → Live dashboards show ongoing progress and impact metrics.
- Compliance & Reporting → Automated CSR compliance reports (e.g., MCA filings in India).
Agents we designed include:
- 🔎 Discovery Agent → Finds projects.
- 🎯 Alignment Agent → Matches with SDGs/ESGs.
- 📊 Evaluation Agent → Scoring & comparison.
- 🧑⚖️ Decision Support Agent → Explains recommendations.
- 📑 Reporting Agent → Auto-generates compliance docs.
Technologies used:
- React + Flask for front-end/backend.
- AI Models for NLP document parsing & project scoring.
- APIs like NGO Darpan, UN SDG datasets.
- Visualization libraries for impact dashboards.
📚 What We Learned
- The CSR ecosystem is fragmented — corporates, NGOs, and regulators don’t speak the same language.
- AI can bridge the gap by translating reports, aligning projects with SDGs, and standardizing metrics.
- Building a multi-agent architecture gave us modularity: each agent does a clear job.
- Transparency and trust are as important as technology in the sustainability sector.
⚡ Challenges We Faced
- Data Integration: NGO datasets were inconsistent, requiring cleaning and standardization.
- Alignment Mapping: Mapping company CSR budgets → SDGs → NGO projects wasn’t straightforward.
- Explainability: Corporates needed clear, human-friendly AI explanations, not just scores.
- Compliance Complexity: Each regulator (India, global ESG boards) has different reporting standards.
- Time vs Scope: Balancing a scalable architecture while ensuring a working MVP was tough.
🧮 Example of Evaluation Matrix (Simplified)
Suppose a corporation wants to spend ₹50L on education projects.
We compare two NGO projects:
| Project | Cost (₹L) | SDG Coverage | Expected Impact | Risk Score (0–1) | Alignment Score (0–100) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NGO A – Rural Schools | 30 | SDG 4 (Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality) | 1200 students educated | 0.2 | 87 |
| NGO B – Digital Literacy | 40 | SDG 4, SDG 9 (Innovation) | 2000 students trained | 0.4 | 81 |
The corporation can then decide based on cost-efficiency, impact, and risk appetite.
🚀 Future Vision
- Marketplace Mode: NGOs directly upload projects, and corporates auto-match.
- Satellite + IoT Feeds: Real-time validation of project impact.
- Cross-Border CSR: Enable global companies to align CSR with global SDGs.
- Full Agent Autonomy: A system where agents can handle CSR planning end-to-end.
✅ In short, SustainAlign aims to become the “LinkedIn + Bloomberg Terminal for CSR & ESG” — a single place where corporates, NGOs, and regulators connect with trust, data, and impact.
