Inspiration

SustainAI was born from the realization that while many want to recycle, the rules are often confusing. We wanted to build a tool that makes sustainability intuitive and rewarding.

What it does

SustainAI uses cutting-edge computer vision to identify items and provide immediate, detailed recycling guidance. It tracks your CO2 impact in real-time and gamifies the experience with a points system to encourage sustainable habits.

How we built it

We built SustainAI using React for a fast, responsive UI and Google Gemini 1.5 Flash for the heavy lifting of image recognition and sustainability analysis. The integration uses the @google/generative-ai SDK for efficient, reliable AI features.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring accurate CO2 impact calculations and making the AI response detailed yet easy to understand for the user.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully integrating real-time AI computer vision that can distinguish between various types of waste and providing meaningful environmental metrics.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the Generative Language API and how to effectively leverage Gemini for real-world environmental impact tracking.

What's next for SustainAI

We plan to add more social features, allow community challenges, and integrate with local municipal recycling databases for even more localized accuracy.
