SustainAHack

SustainAHack is a website that promotes sustainable living by describing ways to do so and it also provides a Compost Calculator that tells a user whether or not an item they input can be composted.

Inspiration

We knew that we wanted to create something centered around sustainability and we also wanted it to be about something that is easily accessible, like composting.

What it does

SustainAHacks describes our current environmental issues and provides information for people to compost, which is one of the most accessible ways to live sustainably. It also has a "Compost Calculator" that takes an item from a user and returns whether or not that item is compostable.

How we built it

We used html, Bootstrap, and css for the design and layout of the website and Javascript for the Compost Calculator.

Challenges we ran into

We initially wanted to incorporate the Twilio messaging API, but did not have enough time to fully understand how to implement it. Originally, we planned on allowing users to sign up for weekly text messages containing sustainable living tips and information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of the entire website because it took a lot of coordination and work to complete it!

What we learned

Several of us gained new skills in html, css, and javascript. A lot of what we did was new to use, so we definitely learned a lot.

What's next for SustainAHack

We are interested in implementing the Twilio messaging API like we originally intended. We'd also like to flesh out the Compost Calculator a bit more so that it can calculate what can be composted for several different composting systems instead of just small home composting systems.
