Inspiration
The inspiration behind "Sustainably" comes from the idea that our purchasing decisions have the power to drive positive change for the environment. We believe that by supporting eco-friendly and sustainable companies, we can collectively create a better world without having to sacrifice convenience or lifestyle. "Sustainably" makes it easy to shop responsibly by curating products from brands that prioritize sustainability, allowing consumers to make informed choices with ease. Every time we choose to support ethical businesses, we not only help the planet but also encourage industries to adopt more sustainable practices. With "Sustainably," you can be a part of the solution—helping the environment while shopping in a way that feels natural and effortless.
What it does
Sustainably is an online platform that allows customers to quickly find eco-friendly products without the hassle of researching multiple sources. Customers can query for items and browse a collection of sustainably rated companies to shop from, view customer ratings, and get price estimates.
How we built it
We built Sustainably using React, MUI, and Typescript for the frontend and Node.js+Express.js, MongoDB, Serp API, RapidAPI, and SEC EDGAR filings API for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge we ran into was finding relevant APIs containing environmental factors about companies as well as the pricing of such APIs. A lot of these APIs were hidden behind pay walls that were too costly to afford or simply didn't work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to be able to create a aesthetically looking page with a functional app, completing our promise of providing a platform for customers to purchase products like they usually do, but on an eco-friendly platform.
What we learned
We improved our communication skills since coordinating between team members was a crucial part in the completion of our project but we also learned about the difficulty and importance of maintaining APIs throughout our search.
What's next for Sustainably
Plans in the near future include a browser extension where users can easily see whether there are eco-friendly products that cost around the same price as the one they're currently looking at on platforms like Amazon.
