Inspiration

Living in Berlin, I watched friends struggle to travel responsibly – they wanted to reduce their carbon footprint but had no easy way to compare transport emissions or find truly eco-certified stays. European travelers crave authenticity and sustainability, yet tools to align travel choices with values were fragmented. That’s when I set out to build a one-stop platform for eco-conscious travel across Europe.

What it does

SustainableTravel Planner lets users compare carbon footprints of train, flight, and car travel, book verified eco-certified accommodations (EU Ecolabel, Green Key, Green Globe), discover locally-owned experiences, offset flight emissions via EU-based environmental projects, and track real-time trip environmental impact – all with transparent 8% booking commissions supporting sustainable travel ecosystems.

How we built it

I started by mapping user journeys for eco-focused European travelers, prioritizing core features like transport carbon comparison and eco-accommodation curation. Using React for the frontend and Node.js/Express for the backend, I integrated CarbonFootprintAPI to pull accurate emissions data and GoogleMapsAPI to filter location-based eco-friendly options. PostgreSQL stored accommodation/experience data, with AWS hosting the web platform for scalability across EU countries.

Challenges we ran into

Sourcing verified eco-certification data for accommodations across 7+ European countries was a major hurdle – many smaller properties had valid certifications but lacked digital records. I also struggled to balance real-time carbon calculation accuracy with platform load speeds, and curating locally-owned experiences without including mass tourist attractions required manual vetting of hundreds of vendors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a seamless flow from destination search to trip summary, with 100% of listed accommodations holding official European eco-labels. The carbon offset feature ties directly to tangible EU reforestation/renewable energy projects, and users can track their trip’s carbon footprint in real time – something no other European travel platform offers in a user-friendly way.

What we learned

I gained deep insight into European sustainability certifications and carbon accounting for travel, and learned to prioritize user trust (via transparent commission and offset data) over feature bloat. Working with local vendors also taught me the importance of centering community impact in travel tech – not just carbon metrics.

What's next for this project

We plan to expand to more EU/EFTA countries, add multi-language support (French, Spanish, German), integrate real-time booking APIs with eco-accommodation providers, and build a mobile-responsive design for on-the-go trip tracking. We’ll also launch a feature to compare trip carbon footprints against regional averages, empowering users to make even more sustainable choices.
