Inspiration
During the pandemic days, we are consuming more and more at home. In other words, we are producing food waste more and more... Every year we are producing 1.3 billion tons of food waste globally, which is an unfortunate contribution to carbon emission by 8%. It must be solved obviously, but how?
What it does
KOMPI provides distinguished experience of contribution to nature as an hobby for users, who are individual residents. Our value proposition is keeping the food waste within Bokashi boxes under a simple compost method and transforming that waste to organic fertilizer. And after all, transferring that fertilizer from individual resident to nature.
How we built it
First, the user downloads KOMPI app. Right after simple registration, the first Bokashi kit including box and materials are provided to the user experience as free of charge. As food waste collection within the Bokashi box is started, the user selects "start compost" and "almost full" options respectively. The app progress the user inputs, set a recommended appointment for delivery-on-door and request for final approval by the user.
After the free pilot period, the user sign up for a continuous membership with a monthly subscription. The progress would repeat itself on each delivery by receiving a new Bokashi kit in exchange for full and sealed box. As a final step, the sealed box is transferred by KOMPI as fertilizer to agricultural area.
Challenges we ran into
*The primary challenge is keeping "stinky" food waste for a specific time at home. KOMPI provides a solution with Bokashi kit to keep food waste without a smell until 15 days. *Garbage collection from residential area is licensed legally. However, collection of fertilizer is license-free process. *Delivery-on-door is an optimization challenge that needs for the user's availability and close delivery route. KOMPI plans to be in cooperation with product and service providers to the door by micro-logistic operation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
KOMPI provides an opportunity to individual residents to be part of the food waste recycling chain. By using KOMPI, individual residents contribute to nature and gain new skills while having an unique experience. We believe that the awareness of food waste recycling will increase and more people will be a part of it day by day with KOMPI. We are proud of providing this opportunity to individual residents.
What we learned
We have observed that individual residents are enthusiastic about food waste recycling. However, they are not willing to change their habits so easily. Especially in social enterprises, individual residents do not expect gaining money in return. Besides, they consider that contribution to recycling as a motivator for social responsibility. Then we learned that logistics operation is one of the major challenges. We aim to overcome that challenge with possible partnerships by providing sustainable cost structure.
Last but not least, we realized that we can create a solution for an environmental and social problem as getting a team and focus to improve our strong idea in a limited time with support of precious mentors. We learned that we have the power to make the world a better place together.
