Inspiration
I got the inspiration from the many problems that I could see many of African households facing to get fuel for cooking, many used firewood and charcoal, which has many effects on their health, the environment and general well being, and also gender equality, so I did some research on other forms of energy, and Biofuels generally caught my eye and that's where an idea came into mind, not fully formed but seeking to be developed.
What it does
It simply uses the food wasted in our fragile supply chains (1.3 billion metric tons annually) and other waste materials like garbage and sewage through the process of transesterification and esterification to produce biofuels, biogas and bio methane as sources of renewable energy.
How I built it
Challenges I ran into
Well, everything has it's merits and demerits, so biofuels had a lot of controversy when I was doing research because many say it competes for food for human consumption, however my idea is looking to convert the food wasted along the supply chain to manufacture the biofuels.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
What I learned
There's a lot that waste can do, even right from our homes, we can find ways to make our waste sustainable and eco friendly. This project has taught me that it is not that we don't have enough food, it is that our systems right from our farms are not sustainable, we need to make use of waste, because it will increase rapidly as population increases thus, the only way I think we can overlook the current problems we have is to look into our waste management.
What's next for Sustainable use of food waste for bioenergy production.
This is just an idea I had in mind, now after doing the research, I've discovered the great impact it will have on all people as well as the environment and global economies, now I would like to think of the systems that can be put in place to make this idea to be adopted for the masses!
