Inspiration

Hi! My name is Nitya Verma, I’m in 10th grade, and my track is energy conservation. The website I've made is titled sustainable fashion, designed to tackle the problem of fast fashion. As you probably know, fast fashion has a horrible impact on the environment and is responsible for a lot of damage. These are a few examples of the damage caused by fast fashion:

Firstly, it is responsible for a lot of waste. This is because of the speedy production of clothes in fast fashion which results in a lot of wasted raw materials and energy. Additionally, many clothes are never even bought and sadly just end up in landfills where they are of no use.

Secondly, fast fashion also creates a lot of pollution, because when plastic is turned into textiles like polyester and nylon, carbon and particulate matter are emitted into the air, along with many other toxic chemicals.

Fast fashion is also responsible for the contamination of natural resources like the air and water.

And lastly, habitat destruction because of the amount of clothes that fill up landfills, and take away habitats from wildlife.

What it does

The main goal of my project is to create a website that will bring awareness to harmful impacts of fast fashion, allow users to set up clothing rentals or rent clothes themselves and also provide environment-friendly alternatives to buying clothes from fast fashion brands. Even though I have not completely finished all these pages, these are the main goals for the structure and purpose of the pages of my website. My website will have four pages. The first home page will be to spread awareness of fast fashion and explain the impacts of fast fashion, along with educating them on environment friendly disposal methods. The second page will be for users to set up clothing rentals and post clothes that they are willing to put up for rental or sale. The third page will be allow users to submit pictures of clothes from fast fashion brands that they want and receive options for similar clothing from sustainable brands. The fourth page will allow users to shop for clothes they want to rent.

The process of coding

I built my website on VS Code using HTML and CSS. I have never coded a website before, and I had only a bit of knowledge about HTML and CSS, so I had to spend a lot of time learning how to structure the code, and what functions to use. However, I am proud that I was able to make something, even if its unfinished. I learned a lot of HTML and CSS along the way, and I am happy with my progress and experience coding.

What's next for Sustainable Fashion

First of all, I need to finish the third and fourth page. For the third page (find alternate brands page), I want add a tool that can classify any image uploaded by a user and find similar clothes from sustainable brands. For the fourth page (shop rentals page), I want to add options for user info where users can submit their information, and sign up to rent and buy clothes. Overall I also want my website to be more interactive, user friendly, and also flexible for phones and tablets.
