Inspiration

About a year ago, I had the privilege of visiting the United Nations Headquarters with my family on a trip. I was inspired by the conscientiousness of the people there, who exposed me to the humanitarian world of philanthropy. I decided to join this Hackathon not only to develop my coding skills but also to bring awareness to the issues the UN is combating, however possible. For the concept of the Web App, I am inspired by 'Free Rice' a game by the U.N World Food Programme that donates rice for every correct question answered. I believe it is a genius way to fundraise in a way that makes everyday people feel included and engaged.

What it does

The Sustainable Development for Kids is a fun and impactful web app designed to teach kids about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an engaging and easy-to-understand way. Through interactive lessons and educational games, kids can explore topics like clean energy, responsible consumption, and life below water, all while having fun. And for those who feel inspired, there’s even an option to contribute to UN initiatives, empowering young users to make a real difference by donating or doing extra research.

How we built it

I built this using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I used ChatGPT as a code editor.

Challenges we ran into

As someone who is fairly new to coding, I ran into many rookie mistakes, but the hardest one would be figuring out how to gamify the 17 sustainable development goals. I have limited experience with game development, so I could only program games within my current skill level. Despite this, I tried to add various games to the website, even given the time constraints.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of myself for experimenting with new ideas and levelling up my JavaScript, CSS, and HTML abilities. I am also proud of integrating some games into the website. This is my first time coding a Web App completely on my own and coding any games using JavaScript.

What we learned

I learned a lot about fundamental game development and got to expand my knowledge of HTML and CSS. However, I learned most about the right way to learn coding. It is not about following tutorials or memorizing syntaxes but about putting it into practice. I learned more about programming by doing rather than following along.

What's next for Sustainable Development for Kids (Web App)

What I built is not meant to be a finished product but a prototype. My initial vision for this Web App is a place where kids can play educational games about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals while raising awareness of the cause. The next step would be to add more games and create a system where every time someone completes a game or a level, money is raised for an urgent cause. Similar to the trivia game run by the U.N World Food Programme that donates rice to countries worldwide. The difference is the Web App consists of various games raising money for different causes, enabling users to contribute to several issues. Moreover, there will be a feature where users can contribute by making their own game to fundraise for a chosen cause. Keep in mind that this is all non-profit.
