Inspiration 💡
There is a growing global trash crisis, with waste generation far outpacing population growth in many countries. Landfills are filling up at a rapid pace without a direct solution. There are dire environmental consequences from plastic pollution in oceans and greenhouse gas emissions from organic waste decay. Tackling waste at the household level is critical. This is what inspired us to create the site “Sustain your life”.
What it does 📝
The purpose of this site is to help the user reduce household waste within the household. This would allow for landfills to fill up slower as well as protect oceans from being polluted with unregulated trash. This is accomplished through our created community point system where it is partially community regulated. You can gain points for doing actions that reduce household waste, and there is a leaderboard with your friends to foster healthy competition. There is also a forum page within the site for discussion.
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS for front end and PHP and JAVASCRIPT for back end.
Challenges we ran into⁉️
Our CSS style was constantly running into issues that ruined the formatting of our website. But that wasn't the most challenging issue. PHP was a lot more challenging than we initially thought.
Accomplishments that we're proud of😁
The thing that we are most proud of is the knowledge we obtained after finishing this project. We learned a lot of html and css for this project to be able to happen as everybody in our group had minimal front end experience beforehand.
What we learned👨🎓
We learned that decision making is an important thing within projects. For the first few hours, none of us was able to make the important decision on what to do. We all had great ideas, but we didn’t know who to listen to. Eventually we realized we had to make an important decision or else we would never be able to do anything.
What's next for Sustain Your Life🔮
We will hopefully be able to turn Sustain Your Life into a mobile app so it is more optimal for mobile users. We will also add additional features such as stylized goals based on a form when you create your account.
