Inspiration
What it does
People on campus often sort waste incorrectly in the wrong bins, for example putting trash in recycling and recyclable materials in the trash. The goal of our project was to create an app displayed on screens at waste stations on campus that would encourage the habit of sorting materials in the right places while discouraging the opposite, with interactive messages and analytics.
How we built it
We built it using Java and Android Studio.
Challenges we ran into
This was our first hackathon, so we had trouble figuring out where to start. We were also extremely new to Android Studio, so there was a learning curve to the software that we had to overcome.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Seeing our finished prototype come together from scratch.
What we learned
We learned how to approach developing an app as a team using Git and Android Studio, we also learned basic UI design.
What's next for Sustainability Project
We hope to implement a real solution beyond a proof of concept, using sensors on waste stations on campus.
