Inspiration We built the Sustainability Impact Calculator to help individuals and organizations easily measure and track their environmental footprint. As climate change becomes an increasingly urgent issue, we felt it was important to empower people with data-driven insights into how their daily habits and business operations affect sustainability.

What it does The calculator allows users to log activities such as energy and water usage, transportation methods, recycling and waste production. It analyzes this behavioral data and generates a customized report that highlights areas of high impact and offers personalized tips for reducing one's carbon footprint. Users can also see how their score compares to average benchmarks and set goals to improve over time.

How we built it Aws party rock and some prompt engineering

Challenges we ran into One challenge was obtaining accurate emissions data for the many activities we wanted to include. We had to normalize values from different sources to make calculations consistent. Integrating multiple data inputs while maintaining a simple user experience was also difficult. Testing calculations across all usage scenarios took significant effort.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We're proud of building a fully functional minimum viable product within the hackathon time constraints. The calculator is available for anyone to use from any device, which we feel will significantly help more people measure and improve their sustainability impact. We also received positive feedback on the intuitive interface and helpful reporting features.

What we learned Through this project, we learned the value of simplifying complex data for general users. Testing assumptions was critical to refining calculations. We also realized how building for a specific purpose (sustainability) within constraints inspired innovative solutions. Going forward, additional customization and gamification could boost engagement.

What's next for Sustainability impact calculator Moving forward, we aim to expand the calculator's scope to include more activities and metrics. Enriching the database with location-specific factors and adding support for organizations are also priorities. Integrating the tool into existing apps and platforms could dramatically increase its reach. Overall, we hope to continuously improve the experience to make sustainability measurement and progress fun, easy and motivating for all.
