Inspiration

With the growing threat of climate change, many people experience climate anxiety and feel their individual efforts can’t make a meaningful impact. Sustainability Buddy was born from the desire to replace that helplessness with empowerment.
We wanted to build a tool that helps users feel part of something bigger than themselves, and in doing so, create real impact. We did this by helping users understand their local climate, connect with community solutions, and see, in real numbers, how collective action matters.
Because what’s good for people is good for the Earth too.

What It Does

Sustainability Buddy is a personalized climate empowerment app that blends education, community, and measurable action.

  • Educates: Teaches users about local climate vulnerabilities like droughts, floods, or heatwaves and explains their regional impact.
  • Empowers: Provides daily and weekly climate-friendly actions based on individual habits and local context.
  • Connects: Aggregates nearby sustainability events—farmers’ markets, recycling drives, repair cafés—by syncing with nonprofit calendars.
  • Enables: Calculates the most sustainable route to reach those events, helping users reduce emissions as they participate.
  • Visualizes: Displays personal and community data on metrics like CO₂ saved, water conserved, or waste reduced.

Together, it turns awareness into collective, measurable impact.

The Process

We started by defining the emotional and behavioral challenge: turning climate concern into action.

  • Front-End Prototype: Building a mobile-first interface using mock data to simulate local weather and event integrations.
  • Educational Engine: Designing a modular content structure that pairs local environmental insights with practical sustainability tips.
  • Event Aggregator Concept: Outlining an API-friendly system for nonprofits and local organizations to sync public calendars automatically.
  • Impact Tracker: Setting up mock analytics to visualize collective stats—demonstrating how personal choices contribute to shared goals.

Our design approach combines the wellness feel of Headspace with the tracking clarity of MyFitnessPal.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • AI Agent Integration: Learning how to structure agentic behavior through role designation and prompting required multiple revisions.
  • Localization: Balancing global usability with locally relevant educational insights needed careful research.
  • Behavioral Design: Finding the right tone, as motivating without guilt-tripping was essential to addressing eco-anxiety
  • Visualization: Designing data displays that are engaging yet simple enough for everyday use-- right from your pocket.

What We Have Learned

  • Above all, AI is a tool for social good, service and sustainability that needs to be more readily used
  • Empowerment begins with local understanding, as users engage more when they see that climate action matters in their own community.
  • Data, when paired with emotion and story, motivates sustained behavior better than guilt-based messaging.
  • Collaboration between tech, design, education, and nonprofits is key to building an authentic climate engagement platform.
  • Climate solutions succeed when they make sustainability tangible, social, and rewarding.

Current Solutions

While many climate-engagement apps exist—such as Ant Forest in China, which has reduced over 26 million tons of CO₂ through gamified green actions—few platforms emphasize community engagement and collective action, highlighting an opportunity for locally grounded, participatory climate solutions.

What's Next for Sustainability Buddies

  • Real Data Integration: Connect to live weather and environmental APIs for personalized insights.
  • Calendar Sync: Partner with local governments and nonprofits to live-sync sustainability event data.
  • AI Eco‑Coach: Add conversational guidance that explains the “why” behind every tip or decision.
  • Community Challenges: Introduce pledges and group milestones with real-time progress dashboards.
  • Expanded Education Library: Offer gamified micro-lessons linking local climate issues to global change.
  • Launch Pilot Program: Test in select regions with community organizations and gather user feedback.

Sustainability Buddy’s mission is to educate, empower, and connect people through collective, quantifiable climate action—proving that sustainability is strongest when we build it together.
