Inspiration
In a world striving toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we realized that the biggest challenge isn't the lack of data—it’s the lack of understanding. Most reports are dense, static, and inaccessible to everyday citizens. We wanted to change that. Our inspiration came from the idea that progress should be visible, engaging, and actionable. By combining data visualization with AI, we set out to build a tool that brings global sustainability efforts to life.
What it does
SDG Tracker is an interactive web platform that visualizes the progress of countries toward achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Users can explore country-wise SDG performance, analyze trends over time, compare regional progress, and gain AI-generated insights on strengths, weaknesses, and areas needing attention. The goal is to transform complex global data into meaningful stories that inform decisions and inspire action.
How we built it
We began by collecting and structuring open-source SDG data from international databases and sustainability reports. The frontend was designed with a focus on clarity, smooth navigation, and visual storytelling through charts, maps, and scorecards. On the backend, we developed APIs to process and deliver data efficiently. We also integrated an AI module capable of interpreting SDG metrics and generating insights in plain language. Every design decision centered around user engagement—ensuring that data feels alive and approachable.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was cleaning and harmonizing SDG data, as different sources often use varying scales and indicators. Balancing aesthetics with analytical accuracy was another hurdle; we wanted the platform to look beautiful without compromising clarity. Additionally, designing the AI component required careful prompting and testing to ensure the insights were both meaningful and factually grounded.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have created a fully functional platform that doesn’t just show numbers but tells a story. Seeing global data come alive through maps, interactive charts, and AI-driven insights was a defining moment for our team. We also take pride in building a tool that can be used by students, researchers, and policymakers alike—making sustainability accessible to everyone.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned how powerful visualization can be when paired with clear communication. We deepened our understanding of SDG frameworks, explored best practices in data storytelling, and gained experience in designing human-centered interfaces. The process reinforced the importance of aligning technology with purpose—to build not just tools, but catalysts for change.
What's next for SDG Tracker
Our next step is to integrate live data feeds from official SDG databases to keep the platform continuously updated. We plan to add region-based filtering, predictive analytics, and policy recommendation modules powered by machine learning. In the future, we also aim to launch a mobile version and enable users to generate personalized sustainability reports. The vision is to make SDG Tracker a global reference point for tracking and accelerating sustainable progress.
Conclusion
SDG Tracker is more than a data tool—it’s a vision for transparency, accountability, and shared responsibility. By turning data into insight and insight into action, we hope to empower everyone to play a part in building a sustainable future.
