About

Inspiration

We saw the lengths companies would go to bury their emissions data behind greenwashed adverts and felt that the average person deserves better. We wanted them to be empowered and informed to keep their hard-earned money away from companies who would use it irresponsibly and to the detriment of the planet.

What it does

We provide a digital interactive map showing major UK companies with click-through options leading to a ranking of their environmental conscientiousness. This incorporates many attributes and is flexible based on a company’s individual product and function. We also provide an AI chatbot able to discuss the meanings of the sustainability rankings and their real-world impacts with a user.

How we built it

We created the majority of the website using HTML, css, and javascript. This posed a particular challenge as none of us had much experience in any of these languages. We also used two APIs, one to add in a map with customisable markers and pop-up boxes, and one to add an AI chat bot to the site. Again, none of us had done this previously, so it posed a significant challenge. On top of this, we used Figma to design the website, and had a python program to come up with a sustainability score out of 100 for each company.

Challenges we ran into

Developing the weighting strategy for the sustainability factors was challenging as we had to avoid penalising companies for making physical products rather than digital services. Perfecting and streamlining the algorithm took a great deal of trial and error. A major challenge was the teams general lack of experience with APIs, as we had no one who had used one before, however, with intensive research, this was overcome. In fact, we had minimal experience as a group with 3 of the 4 coding languages we used, so again, this required a lot of research.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re especially proud of the AI chatbot and the slick website design. The algorithm is also entirely original, and produces really insightful and thorough results. Each part of the project represents an entirely new skill to at least one of us in the group.

What we learned

We learned how to handle google maps in HTML code and how to introduce a pre-made algorithm to an AI. We also developed the AI chatbot and learned some graphic design to develop website visuals.

What's next for Untitled

As we develop further we would look to add more companies to our database first working through the FTSE 100 then expanding our outlook to global corporations. We would refine our sustainability criteria creating a more comprehensive analysis of the companies and tailor this to the industry they operate within. We would develop a search bar to quickly find companies and add the option for analysis of a specific company, requested by the user, to be scored by our criteria. In the longer term we would look to map various sustainability projects across the UK allowing users to create their own local initiatives.
