Inspiration

I was inspired to create the prototype of Sustain the Walk, an app that encourages you to walk and gain steps by gamifying your exercise experience. Personally, I love playing games and being entertained; for me, walking is the opposite of that. However, by putting the two together, I am more enticed to walk places and gain steps. I usually like to challenge myself and limit myself to not playing games until I reach my walking goal for the day, so I thought, why not make it into an app (or at least a prototype)? So this is a way to make exercising enjoyable as well as solve the issue of sustainability by promoting eco-friendly transportation.

What it does

Sustain the Walk is not only a step counter, but it is also a game. This app would have you set a daily walking goal and then track your steps. For each step you take, you get a point. These points can then be used in the game portion of the app. The game this app utilizes is a word puzzle, which is both educational and fun. For 1000 points, you can get a clue for a word you are stuck on. For 5000 points, you can skip the level entirely. You are allowed to play one level every day. However, if you complete your daily walking goal, you can play an extra level. If you complete your goal 2x over, you can play two extra levels and so on. The point of this game is to entice you into walking and gaining more steps so you can unlock more levels and continue playing.

How I built it

I used a prototyping software called Figma to create a mockup of what the app would look like, as well as develop basic functionality.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge I ran into was how to make the prototype as responsive as possible. Sustain the Walk is an app that requires a lot of user input. To showcase that in the prototype was quite limited due to the software used. However, I was able to include components such as "input" and "buttons" that allow the viewer to click through the prototype as if it were a real app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of the overall cohesive aesthetics of the app. I believe to have a successful app, not only should it have functionality, but it should also have a cohesive and eye-pleasing look to it. There was an eye-catching green theme throughout the app, which represented the eco-friendly aspect of the entire idea behind the app.

What we learned

I learned that to create a successful app or prototype you have to plan and fully develop your vision before rushing straight into the idea. Without a proper blueprint, the end result will not be what you envisioned.

What's next for Sustain the Walk

In the future, I hope to develop Sustain the Walk into a real application and release it on the app store and play store to promote sustainability through walking and playing games!
