Inspiration
We live in a community where the people have a deep passion for nature and growing crops. However, there is a misunderstanding between the soil type we have and how we can use this soil to produce certain crops and plants. This can lead to the degradation of the environment and overproduction, which can deplete the soil, ultimately making the soil we have to be inefficient to use for agriculture and planting.
What it does
We created a website that exposes the underlying issue on how society tends to frequently misuse soil. We continue to explain how soil is a vital aspect to the environment we live in and by misusing it, this can negatively impact our way of life. Our website has a Soil Type quiz where we ask the user to select what type of soil they have in their community, and once they select the specific soil type they have, we display information such as, description of their soil, fertilizers they can use, the soil pH level, macronutrients, and native vegetation to plant in the soil. This allows users to have a better understanding of their soil and how they can use their soil effectively without harming it. We also have a Contact Us section where users can input a message that they have.
How we built it
The languages we used to develop our project are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We coded our website using Replit and that allowed us to work on the project together.
Challenges we ran into
Prior to hackTAMS 2023, we were unaware of website building languages such as, HTML and JavaScript. Because of this, we were struggling to create our questionnaire, which was the most important aspect of our website because it aims to provide information about each type of soil and how we can efficiently utilize it. However in the end after trial and error we were able to make our soil type quiz and allow it to run effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accomplishments that we are proud of is that because we are new to using HTML, CSS, and Java Script we are proud of the soil type quiz that provides individuals personalized recommendations and descriptions about their particular soil.
What we learned
We learned a lot throughout this process such as how to add a questionnaire that provides different responses based on the soil type that you enter. In addition we learned how to make a contact us section and add areas for individuals to input their name, email, and the message they wish to send.
What's next for SustainSoil
In the future we aim to add more soil types for individuals to chose from and we hope to add more descriptions and ways for people to improve their soil quality without going out and purchasing fertilizers if they are unable to do so.
