Inspiration
The inspiration for sustAIn came from the growing need to make sustainable shopping decisions easily accessible. We wanted to empower consumers to choose eco-friendly products by comparing the sustainability of items across various online platforms like Amazon and eBay.
What it does
sustAIn allows users to compare the sustainability of products by pasting the product link from online shopping websites. It analyzes and scores products based on material sourcing, carbon footprint, and ethical manufacturing.
How we built it
We built sustAIn using a combination of web scraping and APIs to collect product data. The back end uses AWS Bedrock, which we trained to evaluate sustainability metrics, while the front end is a user-friendly interface developed with Python.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into was accurately assessing sustainability when product data was incomplete or inconsistent. We also faced difficulties integrating data from different platforms and standardizing it for analysis.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a tool that makes sustainability information accessible. The app's ability to provide real-time product comparisons across multiple platforms is a significant achievement.
What we learned
We learned a lot about sustainability metrics and how to assess them. This project also taught us about the complexities of data integration, machine learning model development, and web development.
What's next for sustAIn
Next, we plan to enhance the machine learning model for better accuracy, expand support to more online retailers, and add a feature for user feedback to improve product sustainability ratings.
