Inspiration
Most people don’t realize the carbon cost of what they buy. Our project makes it easy to understand and reduce your footprint — just snap a pic of your receipt or enter your items. We calculate the carbon impact and suggest greener alternatives using Perplexity AI. With a leaderboard to gamify your progress, we turn sustainable living into something fun, social, and effortless.
What it does
It takes images of receipts or text input from user and calculates the carbon footprint for the given items on your bill and with help of Perplexity suggests alternatives with a lower carbon footprint. A leaderboard system was also introduced to game-ify your progress.
How we built it
Firebase for all authentication and data collection. Perplexity API for generating text. Streamlit for UI. Tesseract OCR for image to text. Python for all other backend code. Docker for containerizing the code.
Challenges we ran into
OCR setup was unfamiliar to us and we had some trouble integrating it into our project.

What's next for Sustain-A-Bill
Integrating analytics of reduction of user's carbon footprint and introducing recipes that lead to a lower carbon footprint as well.
