Inspiration

Honestly, I was inspired by the gross amount of waste that occurs in our dining facilities on campus. After having worked at Gracie's for a couple semesters, I realized that we were throwing out hundreds of pounds of food that could go to local people or students in need. Then, I realized that was only the tip of the iceberg and found out that 80 billion pounds of food are thrown out annually from the US alone while 13.8 million households struggle with food insecurity.

What it does

Allows restaurants, food suppliers, and grocery stores to post when they will be giving away food, what it will be, and the location. This allows local people who need it to go and take food that would otherwise be thrown away. This also increases the likelihood of food insecure people getting a healthy meal.

How we built it

This uses React, HTML, and CSS. I did try to get Cockroach DB to work, but was unsuccessful. I do have domain.com registered domain of WeSustain.tech!

Challenges we ran into

Cockroach DB was definitely difficult, as well as Twilio. I'm not a backend engineer so implementing these sorts of things can be difficult. As of right now (midnight), I haven't been able to get the game to fully work but hope to keep going on that!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm actually really happy with how the UI came out!

What we learned

Some horrifying statistics about hunger and food waste, and some really cool things about React!

What's next for Sustain

I would like to get this running on a local level for RIT students and on campus eateries first before putting it out into the world.
