Inspiration
Our group thought that current social media apps promote materialistic desires and are superficial. We wanted to change this, so we decided to build a new social media that focuses on being sustainable both mentally and to the world.
What it does
Our social media allows users to share their good deeds, and challenges to their friends. Users can post, like, share their profile, and generate new challenges using AI seamlessly in the site. They can also view a map of where their challenges are completed, and get friend suggestions for people they may know.
How we built it
We started with a Django base template, and a SQLite database. We split up different features, and focused on our personal strengths to efficiently make the site. We pushed many times to GitHub throughout to make sure our features aligned. We used openAI libraries to query the LLM GPT 3.5. We all worked together on the CSS in the end to fully polish our app.
Challenges we ran into
We found out very quickly that generating challenges ourselves would be very tedious and not sustainable for the long term of the app. We overcame this by integrating AI into our app to create unlimited unique challenges for users to complete. We also had quite a few issues with local cache files, local database files, etc in the gitignore. Finally the CSS was very tedious to get correct in a few features on the site.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built an entire social media site start to finish in a weekend, and we can now begin on our journey to inspire sustainability online.
What we learned
We learned the ins and outs of building a social media site from scratch, we learned about connection algorithms, posting large amounts of information from users, Django components, integrating AI into a web app, and Google maps API.
What's next for sustain
We hope to bring this product to the CreateX program, as we believe this site can change the world for the better. We plan on marketing this site around campus, then trying to get funding to push our site to many users. We also want to make an IOS and Andriod app to take this project around the world. We are so excited for the future of sustain.
