Inspiration

We rely on AI and data daily; they’re integral to our lives. However, data centers are resource-intensive, consuming significant amounts of energy, land, and water, which leads to a substantial environmental impact. Currently, data centers account for 3% of global energy use, a figure projected to reach 10% by 2030. How can we mitigate their climate impact going forward?

What It Does

Our solution offers a chatbot designed to provide comprehensive consulting services, enabling customers to build and manage data centers effectively while addressing the existential threat of climate change. It tracks and monitors real-time progress toward ESG goals, ensuring continuous alignment with sustainability efforts.

How We Built It

We implemented a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) method, using a custom-built database specific to California. This database includes a curated list of local vendors and suppliers in cooling, power supplies, server racks, energy companies, as well as relevant regulations and policies. Additionally, we performed prompt engineering and used the Llama 3.2 model to power the chatbot. The frontend was developed in React.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of our main challenges was data availability, as high-quality data required for comprehensive consulting is often costly and difficult to obtain. Data transparency was another issue, with limited access to full details on vendor practices and energy usage, making it hard to verify sustainability claims. Additionally, ensuring data quality posed a challenge, as inconsistencies and inaccuracies in source data impacted our ability to deliver reliable recommendations.

Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of

We’re proud to have developed a chatbot capable of delivering specific, detailed advice tailored to data center management, offering more targeted insights than generic AI tools like ChatGPT. This achievement allows users to make informed, actionable decisions on sustainability practices. Additionally, we successfully established a marketplace within the platform that connects users directly to vendors. This marketplace not only supports data center sustainability efforts but also promotes collaboration within the industry for greater environmental impact.

What We Learned

We gained insights into critical factors and considerations necessary for data center decarbonization, as well as strategies to optimize sustainability outcomes.

What’s Next for sustAInData

We plan to establish partnerships with vendors to integrate their inventories into our marketplace, expanding our ecosystem for sustainable data center solutions.
