About SusDev

Inspiration

The inspiration for SusDev came from the urgent need to address climate change and promote sustainable living. Witnessing the alarming effects of environmental degradation, I wanted to create an app that empowers individuals to make eco-friendly choices, particularly in their food consumption and daily habits. The goal was to provide users with the tools and knowledge necessary to understand their impact on the planet and to encourage small changes that can lead to significant results.

What It Does

SusDev serves as an all-in-one platform for sustainable living. It offers:

• Eco-Friendly Recipes: Users can explore a variety of recipes that are both delicious and environmentally friendly.
• Climate Tracking: Real-time climate data is available for different locations, helping users stay informed about local environmental conditions.
• Daily Trackers: Features such as water intake tracking and carbon footprint calculators encourage users to monitor their habits and make informed choices.
• Educational Resources: The app provides insights into climate change, sustainability practices, and tips for living a greener lifestyle.

How We Built It

1. Frontend Development: The app was developed using Next.js for its server-side rendering capabilities and Tailwind CSS for a responsive and modern design.
2. API Integrations:
   • Gemini API for sustainable recipes.
   • YouTube API to provide users with instructional videos related to the recipes.
   • Open Meteo API for real-time climate tracking.
3. User Experience Design: We focused on creating an intuitive user interface that encourages engagement without overwhelming users, combining simplicity with rich content.

Challenges We Ran Into

• API Management: Integrating multiple APIs presented challenges in terms of rate limits and data management, requiring effective caching strategies.
• User Engagement: Striking a balance between providing detailed information and maintaining a user-friendly experience was difficult, especially with complex topics like carbon tracking.
• Real-Time Data Accuracy: Ensuring that climate tracking features displayed accurate and timely data across various locations posed technical challenges.
