Inspiration
During our first night at Calhacks, we began pondering terrible fantastic ideas for projects that combined our team's shared hobbies! Fortunately, or unfortunately, perhaps, Snarky Susan just barely beat out our other ideas for Pyrotechnic Phil, an arson-loving AI who will tell you how to start a fire with your nearest circuit, and Aimless Alby, a mirror of our team's horrible sense of direction who will purposefully guide you in the opposite direction of where you're trying to go. As a team who really loves video games and film, we hoped to build a tool that would allow us to perfectly encapsulate the feeling of making an obscure reference and having someone fail to understand it.
What it does
Built with Hume.ai, Gemini API, and GoDaddy Registry, Snarky Susan will impatiently listen to your best voice-acting impressions and give her (usually) correct response with no small amount of ribbing. Utilizing Hume.ai's powerful Empathic Voice Interface (EVI), Susan has the ability to sound just like a displeased mother, disappointed sister, or disgusted best friend, preparing you for the emotional hurt of having your coolest voice impressions being rudely turned down by your loved ones!
How we built it
The frontend of our app is built in Flask.js, and the backend as well as connections to Hume's EVI API are done in Python. Susan sparkling personality, on the other hand, is made up of Hume.ai and Google's Gemini's brilliant models. Lastly, the website is hosted on GoDaddyRegistry.
Challenges and Accomplishments
This was our first time working with Hume.ai, or any type of voice AI, so we definitely had a bit of a learning curve when it came to implementing it and hooking it up to our Flask.js frontend. Additionally, as some of us are newer to hackathons, we definitely went through and tried out as many tools from sponsors as possible to find the best fit for Susan, which, while time intensive, was extremely fun and enlightening! It was to our great disappointment that we were not able to create a beautiful mashup of every single sponsor tool. Perhaps next time!

What's next for Susan -- A Snarky Cinephile
We hope to expand Susan's databases so she can not only guess more common media quotes, but also more obscure quotes, facts, and potentially even pictures, making her more generally judgmental of everything you do! Additionally, we hope to optimize her running speed so she's able to more quickly give her snarky comebacks.
