Inspiration: As AI grows, it's harder for people to understand what is real or fake online. My grandparents and siblings often can't tell what's dangerous, so my team and I decided to create a website/app that teaches all ages how to be safe online and how to recognize threats.
What it does: The web-app contains 7 lessons, each of which teaches the user about the dangers that are out there online. Each lesson is punctuated with mini games to test the knowledge of the user. Every time they get a correct answer, they earn points so they can by add-ons for their avatar.
How we built it: We used Django for the backend of the website since it's easy to learn, as many of our teammates are amatuer programmers. There was a lot of collaboration when it came to what we wanted the front end to look like, using Javascript, CSS, HTML, and Python through VSCode to get the visuals up and running. We had some assistance from Gemini AI to help streamline the front end and make sure all the user interactions worked. There were a lot of messy whiteboards, jam sessions, and laughs creating this project, and we are very proud of how it turned out!
Challenges we ran into: With a wide range of skill levels, our team faced the difficulty of balancing the load and getting ideas across in a way that everyone could understand. During our workshopping faze, though, we were able to identify our strengths, and everyone naturally molded into their respective roles for designing, building, and fine tuning. This truly was a team effort, and none of it would have been possible without the ideas of everyone. Another challenge the team faced was Gemini changing random parts of the website as we asked it to change color schemes and such. There were several hiccups making sure that the front end looked clean, causing us to backtrack, but in the end we got it to work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: We are very proud to have created something so functional in 24 hours. We're proud of the complexity of the different pages, and how asthetically pleasing the visuals are. We recieved many compliments on the set up and visuals of the webapp, for which we were very grateful. We are also proud of the UI/UX elements, and how intuitive the webapp is. It's easy to navigate, with everything organized in a way that any user can understand
What we learned: Through this project, we learned the importance of breaking things down into small, managable compontents to work with the whole. Our idea was fairly complex, with all of its moving parts, and it was made much easier by breaking down the problem into manageable chunks. We also learned the importance or teamwork and patience as we tried to understand each others ideas and bring them together into a cohesive whole.
What's next for Sus or Safe: As of right now, we believe that this could be a successful webapp in the real world. With enough funds, we would love to have this out in the real world for people to use, since we believe it would be beneficial for anyone and everyone who doesn't know how to stay safe on the interenet.
