π Inspiration
The idea for FindUnite emerged during a brainstorming session with my team for the Student Hacks hackathon. We wanted to create something impactful that could help people even beyond the event. At the time, Hurricane Helene was in the news, and we thought about how we could assist those affected by natural disasters. While researching, we realized that while many apps and websites exist to help locate people missing due to kidnappings, there were very few resources available for people lost in natural disasters. The limited options we found were mostly designed for first responders, and this sparked the idea for FindUniteβa platform that allows regular people to help search for and locate missing individuals in disaster-stricken areas.
π What It Does
FindUnite is a non-profit search and rescue website designed to help locate people who are missing due to natural disasters. Users can:
- File missing person reports π
- Assist in locating missing individuals by providing help in affected areas π
The platform fosters community-driven efforts to support those in need during critical situations.
π» How We Built It
We built FindUnite primarily using the following technologies:
- HTML π₯οΈ
- CSS π¨
- TypeScript π»
- JavaScript π§
The project is focused on front-end development, with a clean, user-friendly design. While the site is functional, we didn't implement backend infrastructure, which limited some of the features.
β οΈ Challenges We Ran Into
One of the main challenges we faced was:
- Team struggles: Half of our team didnβt contribute to the project πββοΈπββοΈ
- Lack of backend experience: The two of us who remained had no backend development skills, making it hard to implement features like real-time updates π and user data management π.
π Accomplishments Weβre Proud Of
Despite the challenges, weβre incredibly proud that we were able to:
- Complete the project β
- Design a functional, user-friendly front-end π
- Create a platform with the potential to help people in crisis π
π What We Learned
This project taught us the importance of:
- Team collaboration: A well-rounded team with diverse skills is crucial π€
- Backend development: We need to improve our backend skills to create fully functional platforms π‘
