Inspiration
Every day hundreds of restaurants and grocery stores throw out good food that could have gone to people in need. So we were inspired to take action and do something about this.
What it does
Our website seeks to take the surplus amount of food that grocery stores or restaurants have at the end of the day and distribute it among different charities, food drives and shelters for those in need. The website does this by having a login for business's to log their donations and share how much food they can donate. On the other hand for charities/food drives, after they register onto the site, they can claim any surplus food that isn't expired from grocery marts or restaurants.
How we built it
First, we created an idea, then refined it and made sure to plan out all the logistics and how we want the ui to look on a collaborative online whiteboard. After finalizing all the features we want, how they work and the overall idea of how the website will look we used Palantir and its integrated AI to create the website itself.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were making the website fully working and finding all the bugs in the website since AI was used to create it there were many we had to find. The most challenging bug fix was making the map on the charity dashboard work to our liking. Every time we made a change to fix it either nothing would happen or another problem would appear.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall, with very little coding/hackathon experience throughout our team we are very proud that we were able to make a working website in the given time. Overall, we believe our website works very well and to our liking which is why we are so proud about it.
What we learned
We learned a lot about AI use, the process to creating a website and overall learned a lot of valuable skills like how to work in a team with members who you may not know as well.
What's next for Surplus Service
Moving forward if we were to work on surplus service even more we would want to add the ability for the general population to be able to also use our website to help donate and contribute more to helping the shelters.
