Inspiration

SURAKSHA was inspired by a simple but important question: What happens when an elderly person has to manage their healthcare alone while their family lives elsewhere?

Senior citizens living alone may face difficulties such as managing medical records, remembering medicines, finding the right hospital, attending appointments, and getting immediate support during emergencies.

We wanted to build something that goes beyond simply storing medical information and instead connects the senior citizen with their family and healthcare ecosystem.

What it does

SURAKSHA is a healthcare companion designed for senior citizens living alone.

It provides a centralized medical profile where users can manage information such as medical history, medicines, allergies, blood group and reports.

The platform also includes hospital discovery, appointment workflows, family connectivity, nurse-assisted hospital visit workflows and an emergency SOS simulation.

Our goal is to make healthcare navigation simpler and more organized for seniors who may not always have a family member physically available.

How we built it

We built SURAKSHA as a responsive web prototype using React, Vite, JavaScript, HTML and CSS.

We designed the application around different user roles and healthcare workflows, including senior citizens, family members and healthcare support.

For the prototype, we created a structured demonstration dataset containing hospital and healthcare information. The application was then tested locally and deployed as a web application using Vercel, with the source code maintained on GitHub.

The project was developed with a focus on usability, clear navigation and a simple interface suitable for senior citizens.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a healthcare platform that remained simple enough for senior citizens while still providing multiple features.

We also had to think carefully about healthcare data privacy, role-based access, emergency workflows and the difference between a functional prototype and a real-world healthcare system.

Another challenge was designing the hospital and nurse-assisted visit workflow without falsely presenting demonstration data as real-time healthcare availability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that an initial Ideathon concept was developed into a functional web prototype with multiple connected healthcare workflows.

We built the interface, structured the demonstration healthcare data, implemented the major user flows, created the project documentation and deployed the application.

Most importantly, SURAKSHA helped us turn a real-world social and healthcare problem into a technology-driven solution that can be further validated and developed.

What we learned

Building SURAKSHA taught us that developing a healthcare solution is not only about writing code.

We learned about user-centric design, frontend development, data organization, deployment, GitHub-based development, healthcare privacy considerations and workflow design.

We also learned the importance of clearly separating what a prototype can demonstrate from what would require real-world validation, healthcare partnerships and regulatory considerations.

What's next for suraksha

Our next goal is to validate SURAKSHA with real users and healthcare professionals and understand which workflows provide the most value.

Future versions could include medication reminders, telemedicine, fall detection, smartwatch integration, secure medical record sharing, hospital and diagnostic centre partnerships and AI-assisted healthcare insights.

We also envision SURAKSHA evolving beyond a prototype into a scalable healthcare companion that helps senior citizens navigate healthcare with greater independence and support.

Because living alone shouldn't mean managing healthcare alone.
