Inspiration

It started with a missed opportunity.

I had qualified for the final round of a 24-hour hackathon. But when it came to attending, my parents were hesitant. The event ran overnight, and the location raised safety concerns. After everything we constantly hear and see, their decision made sense.

So I stayed back.

Not because I wasn’t capable. But because safety came first.

That moment raised a bigger question:

How many opportunities are missed—not due to lack of talent, but lack of safety?

As girls in STEM, we’re encouraged to innovate and lead. But real-world concerns still influence where we go, when we go, and sometimes if we go at all.

That’s when the idea for SURAKSHA was born— a system that doesn’t just guide people, but helps them feel safe while moving.

What it does

SURAKSHA is an AI-driven safe routing system that prioritizes safety over speed.

It:

Analyzes real-time risk factors like unsafe areas, poor lighting, isolation, weather, and time Suggests safer routes instead of just the shortest Works across multiple transportation modes Supports multiple languages for accessibility Identifies nearby safe zones (like public places, help centers, etc.) Includes a one-tap SOS feature for emergencies

How we built it

We built SURAKSHA as a full-stack web application focused on real-time decision-making and user-friendly design.

Frontend: Interactive map-based UI with clean, intuitive experience Backend: Handles route processing and safety analysis Core Logic: Risk scoring system to evaluate routes Each route is scored, and the system recommends the one with the lowest risk, not just the shortest distance.

Challenges we ran into

Limited availability of reliable real-time safety data Balancing accuracy vs simplicity in risk calculations Designing a UI that is powerful yet easy to use Handling dynamic updates as conditions change

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Turning a real-life problem into a working solution Building a system that focuses on impact, not just functionality Designing an app that is inclusive, accessible, and practical Creating something that reflects the voice and perspective of girls in STEM

What we learned

Innovation starts with observing real problems Safety is a core need, not an optional feature Empathy-driven design leads to stronger solutions Technology can play a key role in enabling freedom and confidence

What's next for SURAKSHA – AI-Driven Safe Routing System

Enhancing AI with predictive risk analysis Adding community reporting features for live updates Collaborating with local authorities and organizations for real-world deployment

SURAKSHA isn’t just about navigation.

It’s about ensuring that opportunities are not limited by safety concerns— and that everyone can move forward with confidence.
