Inspiration
Women’s safety has always been a pressing concern in many parts of the world, including India. Surveys and reports indicate that women are more likely to experience violence and harassment than men. This issue is further exacerbated by a lack of access to immediate help in emergency situations. In response to this problem, the team at Suraksha was inspired to develop an app that addresses the safety concerns of women in India. The team believed that technology could be leveraged to provide a quick and efficient solution to this issue, and thus Suraksha was born. The app was designed to provide women with an easy-to-use, reliable, and efficient way to seek help in times of danger. The goal of Suraksha is to empower women to feel safe and secure as they navigate their daily lives.
What it does
Suraksha is an app designed to address the safety concerns of women in India. With the increasing number of incidents of violence against women, it has become necessary to have an app that can provide immediate help. The app provides an SOS button that sends a message to the person added to the emergency contact list along with the current location of the person. This feature is crucial in emergency situations where the victim might not be able to make a call or text. The app also has additional features like location tracking and a trusted circle that the user can share their location. The goal is to provide women with a sense of security and immediate help when needed.
How we built it
We used Java as the primary programming language and Android Studio as the Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Android Studio is the official development environment for Android, and it provides a range of tools and resources for developing Android applications.
We started by designing the app's architecture and user interface, taking into account the requirements of the app and the user's needs. We created wireframes and mockups to help visualize the app's design and functionality.
Next, we wrote the code for the app's features, including the SOS button, location tracking, and emergency contact list. We used Java to write the app's logic, and we used Android Studio to test and debug the app.
Challenges we ran into
Developing an app like Suraksha is not without its challenges. One of the major challenges faced by the team was ensuring the accuracy of the location tracking feature, especially in areas with low network connectivity. Another challenge was to make sure that the app was user-friendly and easy to navigate, even in emergency situations.
The team also had to ensure that the app was compatible with a wide range of Android devices, which required extensive testing and optimization.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully developing and launching a functioning app that can address the safety concerns of women in India.
- Creating a user-friendly UI/UX that makes it easy for users to access the app's features, even in emergency situations.
- Receiving positive feedback from users who have found the app helpful in emergency situations.
- Raising awareness about women's safety issues in India and contributing to efforts to address them through technology.
