Inspiration
Everyday articles in the news that make us think what if we could have magically somehow saved the person from getting into a situation like that? What if the family and friends and all the nearby help providers knew and saved the person right in time?
Everybody in today's age owns a phone. We, team Suraksha have built a small prototype which is WIP and meant exactly for the purpose of helping those in need.
What it does
Suraksha is built around the idea that any person in a terrible situation should be able to contact nearby family, friends, police and others who can help to get them through the situation.
Workflow of the app is as follows:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| Suraksha service running in background |
| --------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------- |
| | | | | |
| | 3 press power button |----------------------->| GPS triggerred | |
| | | | Alert and location sent to contact list | |
| --------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- |
| | |
| ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| | High priority notification sent to recipient | |
| ------------------------------------------------------------ |
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How we built it
We are not using the standard way of creating apps for a platform. Instead, we're using this amazing cross-platform framework called Kivy. We used Python for writing our app. Inside our app we're using pyjnius and python-for-android. In order to make our app workable on python, we had to write small patches particular to android and same will be required to make the app work on iOS. The app's layout can also be checked on the desktop.
In order to communicate with the recipients and keep the communication between the service and the app we're using OSC protocol. In order to use GPS and send SMS, we're using plyer
Challenges we ran into
Since it is WIP, we're still into issues, but the biggest challenge that we're facing is the time when we stop sending the signals to recipients. There does not seem to be a good solution to this so far.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're a team of three women working as software developers. Priyal Trivedi: Priyal is currently working as a Software developer at Analytics Vidhya. Previously, she was involved in building applications for research projects in Indian institute of Science, Bangalore. More details can be found on: https://priyaltrivedi.com
Pushplata Ranjan: Pushplata a senior full stack developer working as consultant for analytics vidhya. An active member of pydelhi community.Working to start PyLadies delhi chapter soon.
Shivani Bhardwaj: Shivani has been working on Kivy for about 2 months building applications for Android and iOS. She was an Outreachy intern for Linux kernel's netfilter project. She was also the recipient of Training Scholarship by The Linux Foundation in 2016. She contributes to some open source projects, know more about her here.
What we learned
We learned working in sync and managing time. Although we could not really manage building the app completely in time, we're looking forward to work in collaboration and complete it soon.
What's next for Suraksha
Suraksha can go long way given the structure of the application. We have open sourced our app on github to get contributions from developers everywhere.
