Inspiration
SupportArena was inspired by challenges that we have personally observed in rural and underserved communities. In many areas, important issues such as electricity outages, water contamination, damaged infrastructure, and public safety concerns are often communicated through scattered channels like WhatsApp groups, social media posts, or word of mouth. This makes it difficult for authorities and organizations to identify urgent situations and respond effectively.
One experience that motivated us was seeing how limited connectivity and communication barriers in rural areas can delay access to help during emergencies. We realized that communities need a centralized platform where citizens can report issues, while administrators and organizations can quickly identify and prioritize the problems that matter most.
What We Learned
Through this project, we learned how Artificial Intelligence can be used beyond chatbots and automation to solve real civic challenges. We gained experience in integrating AI into practical workflows, designing role-based systems, and creating dashboards that support decision-making.
We also learned the importance of narrowing the scope of a solution. Initially, we wanted to solve many different civic problems at once, but we discovered that focusing on a core problem and building a functional solution creates more impact than trying to build too many features.
How We Built the Project
SupportArena was developed as a web-based civic issue monitoring and response platform.
The system consists of three main components:
Citizen Portal – Citizens can report issues affecting their communities, provide descriptions, and participate in discussions.
AI Analysis Layer – Using Google's Gemini API, the system analyzes reports, categorizes them into relevant domains such as Utilities or Infrastructure, validates their importance, and assigns severity levels including Critical, High, Medium, or Low Priority . In addition,AI-powered early warning system predicts upcoming crises and shares alerts with citizens, administrators, and organizations.
Administrative Dashboard – Administrators can monitor reports, review AI-prioritized incidents, moderate content, and coordinate responses with organizations.
We used:
- HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend
- Firebase Authentication for user management
- Firebase Firestore for data storage
- Gemini API for AI-powered analysis and categorization
The workflow can be summarized as:
Citizen Report → AI Analysis → Severity Classification → Admin Review → Organization Response → Resolution
Challenges We Faced
One of the biggest challenges was defining a solution that could realistically be implemented within the limited timeframe of a hackathon. Civic issues are broad and interconnected, making it tempting to include too many features.
Another challenge was designing an AI workflow that provides meaningful insights without becoming overly complex. We had to carefully determine how reports would be categorized, prioritized, and presented to administrators in a way that is both useful and understandable.
Building a system that serves multiple user groups—including citizens, administrators, and organizations—also required careful planning to ensure that each stakeholder could interact with the platform effectively.
Accomplishments We Are Proud Of
- Successfully building a working prototype of SupportArena.
- Implementing AI-powered issue categorization and severity assessment.
- Creating a centralized dashboard for monitoring community issues.
- Designing a workflow that connects citizens, administrators, and organizations.
- Transforming a real-world community challenge into a practical civic technology solution.
What's Next
In the future, we plan to enhance SupportArena with open data integration, disaster alerts, geolocation-based issue mapping, multilingual support, and predictive analytics. Our long-term vision is to create a platform that strengthens civic participation, improves transparency, and helps communities respond to challenges more effectively.
SupportArena demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence can be combined with community participation to support faster decision-making, better coordination, and more responsive civic systems.
