There has not been a time in history when we have been threatened by a pandemic virus in the way that Covid-19 threatens our world today. The prosperity of our health service is dependent on the accuracy of data, and the data can only be provided by us, the citizens! As the Coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic in the UK changes daily, we need to act as a nation and help the National Health Service (NHS) to understand how many people in their area are self-isolating (or in lockdown), what their symptoms are and what the potential strain on their services could escalate to. This is why we decided to apply our technical skills to help the community and created a data capture tool that allows citizens across the UK to input the information required for the NHS and emergency workers, allowing them to closely and accurately forecast the potential need for handling the coronavirus outbreak.

What it does

We have built a simple yet effective data collection and presentation portal using open source technologies, one that is not only easy to use, but is quick, totally anonymous and totally visible and transparent. Using the portal is easy, you only have six questions to answer: your Gender, Postcode where you are self isolating, your Age Group, the Date you started self isolation, what your Symptoms are and if you have any Underlying Health Conditions.
Once we have collected this data, we make it totally visible for anyone to see across the globe as the data is truly open. As you can see, you are able to search on different criteria relating to the questions that were asked earlier in the process. We feel that the most important data sets are in the Primary Care Trust Box as this is where NHS Trust Executives, Senior Managers, Local Councils and Government can see the potential strain on their services.

The goal is to assist NHS Trusts to understand how this pandemic is driving forward, but also to help the citizens of the UK to understand how both the area they live in, and the areas where their families and loved ones reside are affected by this pandemic.

By seeing this data, senior emergency planners across all agencies can get a feel for what they can potentially expect and have to plan for and what effect it will have on their trust and the wider community. If this platform is successful, there is no reason why other countries couldn’t use this free application.

What is the data being used for?

As the World Health Organisation has announced, the overriding strategy to limit the damage and beat this pandemic is to flatten the curve and raise the line of spreading the virus. In order to do that more efficiently, we should not only follow WHO’s safety recommendations, but we need to be well informed as well. Towards this end, all the data we collect is processed and displayed within this website so that everyone can see the growth of the pandemic and areas of isolation and filter by different parameters. The site is totally free, Open and transparent to everyone, globally.

What's next for "Support your NHS" Covid-19 data capture tool

We hope that in the next few weeks we can expand this project and help other countries and their citizens, collect information and use it to manage the crisis.
