Inspiration

We wanted to eat supper. But with our friends. Sadly, the process of getting everyone's orders in and settling payment was too painful, so we decided to make supperjio.

What it does

Provides a platform for people (mainly NUS students) to view a collated list of supper food options and order food together, by creating and sharing a session via WhatsApp.

How we built it

We used HTML5, CSS3, JS and JQuery for the front-end stack. For the back-end, we used mongoDB, node.JS, expressJS.

Challenges we ran into

An unexpected drop in efficiency during the last few hours due to lack of sleep. Other than that, figuring out how link nodeJS with mongoDB and get the JQueries working.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We survived without a constant caffeine supply.

We managed to fully deploy our app on heroku, with backend and front-end integration.

Our website is mobile optimised and responds well to various smartphones, such as iPhones, Galaxy devices and Google Nexus phones.

We were able to apply basic design concepts to make the feel of our app much better.

What we learned

The power of friendship will bring you through many sleepless nights of being a code-monkey. But in all seriousness, I think we learned the importance of focusing on bigger pictures, rather than small details and to prioritise function over form. However, there needs to be a certain level of attention given to design and the overall UI experience. Perhaps most importantly, we learned that communication and being versatile in terms of your function in the team is paramount because you can't build a great app with just a single keyboard.

What's next for supperjio.

Probably getting our database populated with the Ameen's menu, so that it can start being used by more people. After that, working on perhaps helping the user to place the order as well, rather than just collating it. We also hope to have more restaurants on board in the future, but let's see where it goes!
