Inspiration

The idea of Supernova first arose from founders Aia K and Xinyuan Wang’s personal experiences and passion for change. Aia K's relatives personally experienced bride-kidnapping, struggled with societal expectations, kelinism, and were pressured to give up their education, career, and aspirations. She first handedly witnessed them battling with societal expectations and attempting to build a future of their own. This inspired and motivated Aia K to work for girls just like her relatives – in an attempt for them not to repeat the cycle of suffering and harmful traditions. She wishes to create a world where girls don’t have to fight for their minimal rights, but to aspire, pursue, and live the freedom they deserve to see.

Xinyuan Wang has personally experienced the various challenges that growing up in a developing country brought: the inability to access commonly used work software without using a VPN, the lagging international news and the misunderstanding arise from the information gap. At the same time, she directly experienced the educational inequality caused by economic and regional limitations. Based on these experiences and related research, Xinyuan extends this issue to the entire East Asia region, where, due to historical reasons, women have often been disproportionately affected. In facing this “isolated” situation, Xinyuan realized that data alone never tells the full story. The personal tragedies of individuals are often overshadowed by overwhelming statistics. Motivated by this, she aims to create an open, interconnected platform to help women from all over the world communicate, and understand one another.

What it does

Supernova is a gamified storytelling app that raises awareness of global gender inequality. Users navigate real challenges like bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan, education denial in China, and systemic patriarchy worldwide. Each story is interactive—players make crucial decisions that shape outcomes, immersing them in the struggles millions of girls face. By blending cultural exchange, education, and action-driven gameplay, Supernova fosters empathy and inspires change. More than an entertaining game, it’s a powerful tool for awareness and advocacy, empowering users to understand and challenge systemic issues concerning global gender inequality, wherever they are.

How we built it

We used Dart Flutterflow and some Bolt to build it!

Challenges we ran into

Supernova overcame many growth-inspiring challenges this season. One of the major issues revolved around geographic location and communication, as my teammate was based in China and was unable to access Google Meet, Zoom, and WhatsApp. We connected through local Chinese platforms (I learned a lot) and coordinated with our mentors for a better solution! We struggled to find a development app until we found FlutterFlow, which was both flexible and scalable. We also learned to collaborate on GitHub, which was an invaluable experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to partner with The Forum of Women's NGOs, one of Central Asia's biggest NGOs for gender equality. We are also collaborating with YouthxYouth, an emerging youth-led, adult-supported movement to radically reimagine the future of education.

What we learned

This season, Supernova stepped outside of our comfort zones, overcame challenges, and grew stronger. Specifically, we learned the following skills:

  • Collaboration through countless brainstorming and problem-solving sessions;
  • Development using FlutterFlow, open-source Twine, and GitHub (before I couldn’t even do push/commit);
  • Using the Kanban management system on Trello to stay on track of tasks and deadlines;
  • Secured two positive contacts with NGOs (potential partnership) via email!;
  • Currently navigating official registration. In terms of AI, we learned to:
  • Use Google Gemini to brainstorm revenue models and legal registration.
  • Implement FlutterFlow Co-Pilot to code certain app features. We discovered that AI can act as a mentor, a teammate, and a co-pilot by brainstorming, providing additional resources, and guiding the project.

What's next for Supernova: She Speaks

We plan to translate our app into Chinese, Kyrgyz, and other languages to reach a wider audience. We also plan to create a new "data mode" that includes statistics on the world map, alongside the stories.
