SuperNova: Control from the Skies, Clarity on the Ground

Inspiration

When we first heard about the upcoming satellite-based internet services launching in our country, we were thrilled—but also cautious. While the technology was groundbreaking, we noticed a gap: there were no tools for users to track, verify, or interact with this infrastructure.

Inspiration struck from the most obvious sources—telecom companion apps like MyJio and MyAirtel Thanks. These apps provide users with visibility into their mobile networks. We asked ourselves: Why shouldn’t satellite networks offer the same transparency and user control?

That’s when we decided to build SuperNova—a tool that empowers users with insight and control over their satellite internet experience.

What It Does

SuperNova is a companion app for satellite internet users that provides:

  • Real-time tracking of satellite signal availability in a user’s location.
  • Status dashboards that reflect uptime, performance, and signal strength.
  • Coverage maps showing active satellite zones across the country.
  • Alerts and diagnostics when connectivity drops or quality degrades.
  • User reports and feedback tools to improve crowd-sourced accuracy.

In essence, SuperNova acts as a control panel for users to understand and manage their satellite-based connectivity—something never offered before in this space.

How We Built It

We began by designing a clean, intuitive frontend inspired by the simplicity and responsiveness of modern telecom apps. Using a stack of:

  • React Native for a cross-platform mobile experience
  • Map APIs and open geospatial datasets for live coverage mapping
  • Custom backend APIs to interface with satellite network telemetry (as available or simulated)
  • Local caching and offline modes, to ensure usability in low-signal areas

We also ensured modularity, so the app can evolve with future satellite network upgrades or regulatory guidelines in our country.

Challenges We Ran Into

  1. Limited public access to live satellite telemetry
    We had to simulate signal availability intelligently using proxy data and planned satellite paths.

  2. Designing for zero-connectivity regions
    Ironically, we had to make the app usable without a working network, including offline caching and diagnostics.

  3. User education
    Communicating complex satellite operations in a simple UI required thoughtful UX choices.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Built a fully functional MVP from scratch as a small, independent team
  • Delivered a telecom-grade user interface with features matching major industry apps
  • Designed the app to work in rural, remote, and low-signal areas
  • Created a platform that can scale and integrate with real-time satellite data as it becomes available

What We Learned

  • Accessibility matters more than complexity — users prefer clarity over raw data
  • Building trust through transparency is critical in new tech domains like satellite internet
  • There’s a huge need for user-first tools in the connectivity space—especially in emerging markets

As we move forward, our goal is to make SuperNova not just a utility, but a community-powered ecosystem where users feel engaged, empowered, and rewarded.
