Motivation:
When my wife and I moved to Denmark, we realized how f***ing hard it was to learn Danish. We did some Duolingo and learned some basic vocab, but there was no chance that was going to get us to conversational fluency.
So I hacked together an app for us to practice speaking in real-world scenarios like ordering a coffee.
Immediately we saw how quickly this helped us improve both our speaking skills and confidence.
A few friends started to notice, asked if they could use it, and it worked for them too...
Opportunity:
This is when I realized there was such a hole in the exisiting language learning market. It's a super competitive, massive market, but all the big players are focused on the helping people learn a new language from scratch. They do a great job with that, but don't take you much further than memorizing some basic vocab.
None of these other apps can actually bring you to conversatonal fluency.
Superfluent:
A conversational language learning app with hundreds of real-world scenarios to practice. Get constant feedback on your speaking skills and track your progress over time. 18 languages to choose from with support for more coming soon.
Monetization:
Everyone starts with the unlimited version of Superfluent for free. After a week, we limit it 1 conversation a day or you can upgrade to a monthly or annual subscription for unlimited practice.
During my beta testing period over the past couple months, I saw that this was the most effective strategy: show people the magic upfront and get them hooked, then offer a paywall for a premium version for power users while the rest continue with the free version.
Ship-a-ton:
Very fortunate timing with the Ship-a-ton competition. Thanks for the extra push to get this thing launched!
