Super Song Finder

Inspiration

I was in China and there are some songs I can not listen to on apple music because of region lock. How do I know which platform will allow me to listen to it? Don't get me started with youtube music in China.

What it does

It will search for a song name, with or without the artist, and then it will return the result of regions and platforms for which the song is authrorized. This will help user find ways to listen to their favorite songs!

How we built it

We built it using an HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frontend and a Python + Flask backend, accessing the YouTube Data API v3 to query song metadata and regional availability.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was unifying our development environment. Managing different Python versions and dependencies made it difficult to establish a common workflow for all team members, especially given our cross-platform setup (PC vs. Mac, x86 vs. ARM architectures). Additionally, expanding our inventory to integrate multiple APIs and music platforms presented ongoing architectural hurdles as we scaled. Another major challenge we run into is the domain and scope of this project, we need an approch to catagorize and return results of countries. For example

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how effectively we collaborated and communicated to build this project together. Each of us leveraged our individual strengths to maximize productivity and keep development moving smoothly. Everyone brought unique skills to the table, and working together proved to be the best way to tackle each challenge we faced.

What we learned

We learned how to effectively integrate third-party APIs and implement secure practices for handling API access. Beyond technical implementation, we experienced firsthand how to translate the theoretical concepts learned in our UBC Computer Science courses into a live software development environment—all while delivering results under strict time pressure.

What's next for Super Song Finder

We want to expand to include more API so we can have more platforms and results for our user. Also we learn that spotify depreciated the country/region meta data, we need to come up with a different way to solve this problem.
