Inspiration

I’ve always loved the classic 2048, but craved more depth and style—something that felt premium, competitive, and tailored for casual & hardcore puzzle fans alike. The idea for Super 2048 was born from wanting to elevate the core merge mechanic with dynamic visuals, tiered difficulty, and rewarding feedback for every big merge.

What it does

Super 2048 reimagines the classic tile-merging game with 4 difficulty levels (Easy to Extreme), grid sizes from 4x4 to 8x8, unlimited-to-zero undo options, and satisfying tiered merge effects (from subtle shocks to legendary full-board explosions). It auto-saves progress, tracks achievements, and lets players share scores with friends.

How we built it

We started with core game logic in vanilla JavaScript—coding tile movement, merging rules, and difficulty-specific spawn probabilities. For the UI, we used CSS to craft glassmorphism panels, neon gradients, and smooth animations (slide, merge pops, particle bursts). LocalStorage handled save states/achievements, and the Web Share API added sharing functionality.

Challenges we ran into

Syncing animation timing with game logic (especially on Extreme difficulty, where effects needed 30% faster durations) was tricky—we had to balance visual flair with game pace. Ensuring touch/mouse/keyboard controls worked seamlessly across mobile/desktop also took iterative testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a cohesive, premium visual identity with glassmorphism and neon accents that feels polished on all devices. Nailing the tiered merge reward system—each big tile (2048+) triggers a dramatic, satisfying sequence that makes every win feel earned.

What we learned

Mastering CSS animation chaining to avoid visual clutter; balancing game difficulty so Easy is relaxing and Extreme is genuinely challenging; and how to persist complex game states in LocalStorage without performance hits.

What's next for this project

We plan to add daily challenges (fixed seed grids for daily competition), a local leaderboard for tracking weekly high scores, and optional sound packs for custom merge audio cues. Long-term, we’re exploring adding a lightweight online leaderboard to let players compete globally.
