Inspiration

Sunya was born at the intersection of modern burnout and ancient wisdom.

We were inspired by the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, which emphasizes the power of small, consistent habits in transforming life. At the same time, Indian Vedic philosophy — through texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads — already provides deep insights into discipline, focus, and mental clarity.

Yet, in today’s digital world:

People struggle with distraction and screen addiction Mindfulness apps feel generic and disconnected Ancient knowledge remains inaccessible and underutilized

What it does

Sunya is an AI-powered mindfulness ecosystem designed to combat digital burnout and lack of focus. It combines ancient Vedic wisdom with modern AI to provide personalized, actionable guidance.

Sunya Yogi: A contextual AI mentor that offers philosophical guidance based on user behavior Vedic Search: A scripture-grounded search engine that delivers authentic insights from Vedic texts Digital Detox Engine: Tracks focus time and builds discipline through streaks Zen Pass System: Gamifies consistency and protects user habits

Unlike traditional apps, Sunya focuses on long-term transformation, not just short-term relaxation.

How we built it

Sunya is a full-stack, AI-first application:

Frontend: React Native (Expo), TypeScript, Zustand Backend: FastAPI (Python), MongoDB Atlas (async with Motor) AI Layer: Groq (Llama 3.3) for fast inference Google Gemini as fallback Custom AI Orchestrator for routing and control

We implemented a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline to ensure responses are grounded in curated Vedic datasets, reducing hallucinations and increasing authenticity.

Challenges we ran into

Curating authentic Vedic data: Ensuring accuracy and reliability of sources Preventing AI hallucinations: Restricting responses to meaningful, scripture-based outputs Balancing depth with usability: Making complex philosophy simple and interactive Latency issues: Maintaining fast AI response times for a smooth experience

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working AI mentor (Sunya Yogi) with contextual responses Designed a Vedic-grounded AI system instead of generic chatbot behavior Created a gamified detox system that promotes discipline Achieved a scalable architecture with multi-model AI fallback

What we learned

AI needs constraints and grounding to be truly useful Combining behavioral psychology + philosophy + technology creates deeper impact User retention depends on habit systems, not just features Building meaningful products requires balancing innovation with simplicity

What's next for Sunya

Expand Vedic dataset with more structured and multilingual content Improve personalization using user behavior and long-term memory Add voice-based AI mentor for a more immersive experience Launch web + mobile production version Explore partnerships in education and corporate wellness
