Inspiration

Sunya was inspired by a simple observation: despite having access to more technology than ever, people are more distracted, anxious, and mentally exhausted. We drew inspiration from Atomic Habits by James Clear, which highlights the power of small, consistent actions in shaping behavior. At the same time, Indian Vedic philosophy offers timeless frameworks for discipline, clarity, and self-awareness through texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads.

The problem is not the lack of solutions — it’s the lack of accessibility and personalization.

What it does

Sunya is an AI-powered mindfulness ecosystem designed to help users overcome digital burnout and build focus. Sunya Yogi: A contextual AI mentor providing personalized, philosophy-driven guidance Vedic Search: A semantic search engine delivering authentic insights from scriptures Digital Detox Engine: Tracks focus time and builds discipline through streaks Zen Pass System: Gamifies consistency and habit retention Unlike traditional apps, Sunya focuses on long-term transformation, not just temporary relaxation.

How we built it

We built Sunya as a full-stack, AI-first application: Frontend: React Native (Expo), TypeScript, Zustand Backend: FastAPI (Python), MongoDB Atlas (async with Motor) AI Layer: Groq (Llama 3.3) for fast inference Google Gemini as fallback Custom AI Orchestrator for routing and control We implemented a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline to ensure responses are grounded in curated Vedic datasets.

Challenges we ran into

Curating authentic Vedic data while maintaining accuracy Preventing AI hallucinations and irrelevant outputs Balancing depth with usability for a modern audience Maintaining low latency for real-time AI interaction

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a functional AI mentor with contextual responses Designed a Vedic-grounded AI system instead of generic chatbot behavior Created a gamified detox system that encourages discipline Developed a scalable architecture with AI failover support

What we learned

AI needs constraints and grounding to deliver meaningful results Combining behavioral psychology + philosophy + technology creates deeper impact User engagement depends on habit systems, not just features Simplicity is key when delivering complex ideas

What's next for Sunya

Expand Vedic datasets with multilingual support Improve personalization using long-term user memory Introduce voice-based AI mentor for immersive experience Launch production-ready web and mobile applications Explore use cases in education and corporate wellness
