What Inspired Us
People track their steps, their sleep, their calories, but never their sunlight. Yet light is one of the most powerful inputs to human health, directly regulating mood, energy, Vitamin D synthesis, and circadian rhythm. One of the leading causes of seasonal depression is simply not getting enough of it.
The problem isn't just the lack of sunlight, but that there's no way to know you're lacking it. Your body can't tell you.
With Sunward,
We wanted to turn sun exposure into quantified benefits, and turn sunlight deficiency into resolvable data. Not a generic score, but a personal metric, unique to each user's body, skin type, and goals. Everyone gets the amount of sun they specifically need to be healthy.
Challenges
The hardest challenge was information overload. Sunlight science is complex: UVB, lux, UV index, sun elevation angle, skin type, cloud diffusion. We wanted to help everyone understand their light intake, but surfacing all of that data would lose users immediately.
In the end, we made a single design decision that solved everything: Sun Points. The sunflower takes it one step further, turning even the number into something anyone can read at a glance.
