Inspiration

A small neighborhood merchant in Senegal needs a clear way to request a low-value payment, verify settlement, and understand the risks without navigating a complex cryptocurrency interface. SunuSats is a design hypothesis; we have not yet performed local merchant validation.

What it does

SunuSats is a French-first, English-capable, mobile-friendly Bitcoin Lightning payment companion. It connects to an existing Lightning wallet using Nostr Wallet Connect (NIP-47), and includes invoice creation, QR presentation, invoice review and payment, balance retrieval, transaction history, and a plain-language safety guide. A separately labeled offline demo simulates receiving and sending without moving money. Wallet credentials stay in browser memory and do not pass through the application server.

How we built it

HTML, CSS, vanilla JavaScript ES modules, the Alby NWC JavaScript SDK, Nostr WebSocket relays, a small optional AI education API route, and Node unit tests. The wallet adapter invokes NIP-47 commands against the user's connected wallet; SunuSats is non-custodial.

Challenges

Different NWC wallets expose different methods, amounts and settlement checks must be validated at the wallet boundary, and demo flows must never be mistaken for real payments. For this reason the simulated invoices are explicitly non-payable.

Accomplishments

A responsive bilingual prototype, client-side NWC wallet adapter, guided payment confirmation, mock ledger with transaction history, a privacy-focused threat model, README and automated tests. The core JavaScript unit tests passed; real-money settlement and live NWC interoperability have not been verified in this environment.

What's next

Test small-value live NWC payments with a compatible wallet, validate the concept with Senegalese merchants, improve low-end mobile accessibility, add Wolof localization and improve independent BOLT11 verification.

Security and impact

Security by design: explicit payment review, small default spending caps, no server handling of NWC credentials, no third-party analytics, and optional AI guidance restricted to general topics. The prototype is not audited and must not be used to store significant funds.

AI use: AI assisted with product planning, copy and prototype development. Optional user-facing AI education has an offline deterministic fallback; no payment secrets or wallet data are sent to AI.
