Inspiration
Our main inspirations were our own stories. As a first-year educator, Nari received advice from experienced colleagues to maintain a 'memory drawer' as a reminder of her reasons for choosing the teaching profession. Education encompasses numerous moments of connection with students and their families, which can easily be overlooked. Keeping items like drawings gifted by students, appreciative emails from parents, or voice memos of light-hearted classroom moments can help in managing stress and improving the well-being of educators.
Elena reflected on her own experiences going through a period of stressful job search and how important it was to have her loved ones’ perspectives and reminders on her strength, skills and achievements. She would have loved to have a way to visualize all of these memories in the physical space, to feel their solid, embodied presence around her, to find renewed motivation and determination.
What it does
Sunshine Cove invites users to craft a personalized virtual space where memories come alive. The cove acts as a canvas, allowing individuals to curate an interactive, spatial collection of pictures, videos, notes, and audio recordings that reflects the essence of their lives. They materialize as photo frames, tape players, and other real objects, to feel as tangible and substantial as physical beloved keepsakes. Whether it's reliving a special vacation, hearing the laughter of loved ones, or revisiting handwritten notes that warm the heart, Sunshine Cove ensures that cherished moments are always within reach. What makes Sunshine Cove truly special is its collaborative feature. Users can invite friends and family to contribute to their virtual haven, fostering a sense of connection and shared joy. Whether separated by physical distance and/or circumstances, loved ones can participate in building a collective tapestry of memories, creating a shared space that transcends the limitations of the physical world.
How we built it
The project is composed of 3 parts:
- The Unity project, which uses the Snapdragons Spaces SDK
- A web app which lets the user input images, audios and videos that they want to save to their Sunshine Cove
- The web server which allows the two to communicate.
Challenges we ran into
- Choosing an idea was challenging. We went through many iterations to come to a conclusion.
- Technical unexpected issues/bugs
- Connecting the Snapdragon SDK to Unity
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Positivity and getting along. Our morale was incredible considering we had never worked together and were experiencing challenging issues.
- Learning new technologies. Our team included designers and developers with limited knowledge before this event.
- We completed this project and are extremely proud of each other and our hard work.
What we learned
- We learned more about Unity and the Snapdragon Spaces SDK, which most of us had never used before.
- How to visualize Spatial design in a 3D space and to design mobile app; how to think spatially when designing an experience
What's next for Sunshine Cove
In the future we will implement archival for autobiographies, placing in real-life scanned items into the world, and make the space available for larger groups like students placing in memories of their school year for their teacher.
