We got inspired to build this prototype because of our environment problems in Indonesia. One of the problems were the amount of UV radiation in a day. People in Indonesia gets sunburns, skin damage and health problems because of the UV radiation.
This is where our prototype comes in. Our prototype, SOLAR, helps people avoid health problems by letting people know about the UV radiation easier.
We built SOLAR by using UV sensors to detect ultraviolet (UV) radiation. then we connect that sensor to the breadboard using wires. Then we connect more wires from the breadboard to the batteries for power and the controller as the brains to the prototype. We also added a switch to turn it on and off. For the LED display, we used a power bank, which has the same functions as the batteries, and we added another controller to control the systems programming. We also used coding for the app where teachers and students can check the UV level and for the LED display to work.
Although everything we said sounds smooth, our prototype making led us to some challenges. Our first challenge was that the wires be broken easily. For this challenge, our solution was to just buy more wires and be more careful. Our second challenge was the coding. For the coding, it was hard because we never learnt how to code a whole system. Our solution for this was to ask for help and learn from our mistakes. Finally, our last challenge was timing. We could spend days just to try to find the right time to meet and make the project. We also came across the problem of the video timing. Our video was supposed to be 3 minutes long, but because of the editing, it took some seconds longer. For this challenge, we do not have a solution, but the advice we should take is to have better time management.
Through this project, we have accomplished many things. We have learnt how to listen to instructions, learn how to code (we're still learning), assemble pieces to make a prototype and many more.
We have learned that every project we do with our friends needs teamwork, determination and hard work, because without these skills, we wouldn't have been able to make SOLAR.
For our project Sunsafe School, we firstly aim for our product to reach the shelves in the future. We also strongly want to add a UV history tracking to record and review UV levels in a day. Lastly, we aim for our product to be more sustainable and affordable, so that people in this type of environment can avoid this pressing problem.
