Inspiration

As a mom who left a marketing and tech career to raise my toddler, I experienced firsthand how overwhelming personal finance feels when you're juggling motherhood. I wanted to build something I wished I'd had: a friendly guide that helps moms increase their financial confidence - one that's easy to use, simple to understand, interactive, and designed to create brighter days ahead.

The concept of Sunny Money was inspired by an Etsy poster I had designed when my little one was a baby, and I've poured immense love and thought into every bit (and byte) of this app.

What it does

Sunny Money helps busy moms build financial confidence in just a few minutes a day. The app features:

  • Personalized journey of mini financial lessons covering saving, investing, and everyday money management
  • Batch recipes with budget cost-per-serving breakdowns
  • Smart tools designed specifically for moms, such as home saving and renovation estimates, baby budget planning, and investing calculators.
  • Fun daily and weekly challenges and quizzes (think no-spend days, making your emergency fund $100 at a time)
  • Ask Sunny, an AI-powered chat assistant for quick, personalized money questions

Every interaction is designed to deliver real value in a few minutes, because that's the reality of a mom's schedule :-)

How we built it

Sunny Money is an iOS app built with React Native and Expo for cross-platform development. RevenueCat is integrated to manage subscriptions for a monthly and an annual plan. The AI chat feature is powered by OpenAI and is fine-tuned for conversational financial guidance.

I used Claude Code and Rork to build the app as someone who is learning to code and is passionate about beautiful app experiences (this will be my third iOS app in a year). Wispr Flow (voice to text) came in clutch to help me code while cooking for my family.

Challenges I ran into

On the technical side, navigating TestFlight errors and approvals as well as testing subscriptions on simulators vs physical devices using Expo and Revenuecat was a fun learning curve for me.

Beyond the code, working as a solo developer - all with a toddler in tow - meant that every hour was earned, not given. I spent many, many late nights and early mornings building this MVP, and it forced me to be efficient and intentional with every decision.

This app is also proof that moms can be so determined to do something, even if it's not something they know initially or have the time for, despite impossible odds.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of creating an app that doesn't talk down to its audience. Financial apps tend to either oversimplify or overwhelm, and mom-specific apps can feel too "cutesy". Sunny Money strikes a balance that respects moms' intelligence and their time while still having an adorable UI.

Also, shipping an app as a solo mom-founder who is not a code ninja, from concept to TestFlight, is an accomplishment in itself!

What I learned

Building for busy moms made me very intentional about every single screen. After sharing this app with some of my mom friends, I realized that every lesson, every recipe, every tool had to pass one test: would a tired mom with five minutes find this worth her time?

I also relied heavily on my own experience and intuition about what made sense to include (and exclude) from the app. I would be tremendously excited to work with Rebecca Louise to make this app useful and accessible to her audience of moms.

What's next for Sunny Money

Short to mid-term

  • Collect additional mom feedback (expand testing group to 50) to improve the app even more and launch on the iOS App Store
  • Expand recipe libraries with seasonal and dietary-specific options (through licensed partnerships)
  • Add community features so moms can share budget tips and do money challenges together
  • Create helpful organic content to drive downloads and conversions

Long term

  • Become the go-to financial wellness companion for every mom, so that she feels confident about her money and financially independent.
